How to compare marriage retreats

A useful shortlist starts with what you want to work on, how you prefer to learn and the full cost of attending. Use these questions to compare retreats, private intensives and workshops on the same terms.

What does the price actually include?

Compare the total for both partners: the program fee, accommodation, meals and travel. Ask whether assessments, individual sessions and follow-up support are included, and read the cancellation terms before paying a deposit.

Packages differ. LIFE lists accommodation and meals within its retreat package, while Couples Therapy Inc. lists travel, lodging and meals separately. A lower program fee may leave more of the trip to pay for.

This directory shows prices in USD per couple. The budget filter uses the starting price, so a longer program, different location or practitioner may cost more. Calculations and extra costs appear in Programs & sources.

Which program type fits your needs?

Retreat
A dedicated getaway with relationship work woven into a retreat setting, shared activities or a residential stay.
Private intensive
Focused sessions for one couple, usually over one or more days, tailored to your relationship and goals.
Workshop
A structured group program with teaching, guided exercises and time to practise together as a couple.

Private and group describe who attends the sessions; they are separate from the program type. A group retreat can still involve work done privately as a couple: the Gottmans describe partner-only exercises within their small-group retreat. Ask about group size and individual attention.

How much time is spent on relationship work?

Days away and hours of guided work measure different things. Compare arrival and departure times, the number of sessions, breaks and any preparation you complete at home. Two programs lasting a weekend can have quite different schedules.

For example, Couples Therapy Inc. describes 16 hours of private therapy over 2.5 days, alongside an assessment and follow-up. Ask what support continues afterward, who provides it and whether it is included in the price.

Who will lead your program?

Look at the person assigned to your program, as well as the organization. Ask about their role, training and experience with the concerns you want to address. If you are seeking licensed couples therapy, confirm their current professional registration and that the program provides that service.
